Who should NOT weigh daily
Daily weighing is a good default for most adults but the wrong tool for specific groups. This is not a hedged aside — it is a hard list.
- Active or recovered eating disorder. Anorexia, bulimia, binge-eating disorder, ARFID, or a history of any of these. Daily weighing can reactivate disordered patterns even years into recovery. - A running log. Even a phone note works. You are looking at the trend across 4 to 8 weeks, not the individual weeks.

- Same scale. Comparing home to gym to doctor’s office is comparing different instruments.
- Before eating or drinking. Coffee, a glass of water, and breakfast add 1 to 3 lb of gastric content within an hour.
- After removing jewelry. Trivial in absolute terms but reduces one more source of variance.

Scale accuracy — an honest read

What the scale does not do
The scale is not a diagnostic device. It does not distinguish fat from muscle from fluid, and no consumer BIA scale meaningfully closes that gap. It does not tell you whether a program is “working” over less than 4 weeks — the 7-day average across 4 weeks is the earliest honest read on trend. It cannot substitute for medical monitoring: an unexplained loss of more than 5% of body weight in 6 months without effort warrants a primary-care visit for thyroid disease, malabsorption, or occult malignancy, not a scale-app interpretation.
